Nikon D90 Review – Should You Buy Second Hand D90 In 2022

Nikon D90 was a great camera in 2008. However, there is a lot of improvement in camera and lens technology in recent times. Today I am going to explain why Nikon D90 is one of the most recommended cameras for beginners.

Nikon D90 Review

So I bought it for just over 350 dollars and it came with the Nikon 50 mm f 1.8 lenses. This lens is also called the nifty 50. we call it that great little lens especially if you want to do portraits like that you just aren’t getting into photography the reason. I bought it for myself personally was I won the second camera not so much for myself but when I go out and about my daughter’s very keen on photography. Read the full review on the best Nikon  d90 lens here.

I didn’t want to spend too much money on a second camera so at 350 dollars. it was a great camera to buy now. Although it was released in 2008. But, it is still in today’s market a very good camera the pictures that you can get on these photos are just really good and paired up with the Nikon 18 to 140mm lens.

I did a review on it and by the way,  it makes it such a good kit now you can get the 18 to 140-second hand for around two hundred dollars. So you’re looking at just over five hundred dollars you’re getting yourself a very good second camera. But the main reason I made today’s video is that in today’s environment not everybody has a chance of going out and buying a new camera there are so many second-hand cameras out there.

Some of them are good some of the bad and this is what I want to talk about why I bought the d90 this was the flagship in 2008 for Nikon it is so much better I had the Nikon d70s the Nikon d80.

I skipped the Nikon d90 and then when the time came to upgrade from my d80 and I went to this d7000 I’ve been having a really good play with this camera even in Astro in low light photos of the milky way are very nice when.

I took photos of the milky way I was using my tikina 11 to 20. So the lens is a bit more expensive and you could pick it up probably for around four or five hundred dollars but I’m not going to talk too much about Astro today.

I’m really going to talk about just landscape and people photography with this camera because if you don’t have much money. Then you’re just looking for a good kit to start yourself with get your feet wet in photography. And when the time comes to upgrade you’ll know exactly what you want and you won’t have to spend too much on your first camera.

Plus, you can always keep it as a backup camera has a second camera especially if you have kids that you can say okay well let’s go out somewhere you can take the d90.

And I’ve got my newer camera some of the specifics on this camera it’s a 12-megapixel camera the metering on this camera is great now how good is it.  Tt is as good as my Nikon d7500 which is a very new camera and Nikon here has rated this camera and people rate it. it has one of the best cameras of its time now just take a look at some of these photos here that I took with this Nikon 18 to 140-millimeter lens the colors are nice and sharp.

Today all I was using was just auto white balance I prefer to test when I’m testing cameras out to use auto white balance because it’s going to give me an idea of how good the camera is of reading the different light situations because sure if I’m shooting a jpeg.

I can put it in daylight or sunny I can put in fluoro I can put it in cloudy so I’m forcing the camera to choose a certain white balance profile.

But if I’m shooting in all of the white balance and just walking around pointing the camera at different subjects and different lighting conditions. I want to see what the camera is going to give me now to look at this. I’m so close and personal with this park bench here it doesn’t matter what I do whether I do a camera review lens review or if I’m out and about.

I’m always paying particular attention to rules of thirds and how I’m going to compose an image 27 mils 1 2 500th of a second f4 iso 200 now when this camera came out it came out as a kit you had the d90 plus the 18 to the 105-millimeter lens which was the same length it came out with the Nikon d80 and I had this lens and it was very good but if you’re looking for this second hand these days and it doesn’t come with a lens then definitely look at the 18 to the 140-millimeter lens.

Because it is such a better lens than the 18 to 105 not only does it give you 35 millimeters extra zoom distance but the lens itself is so much better this is very good for landscape and all that. But you’re saying what about if I want to shoot wildlife well any of the 70 to 300-millimeter dx Nikon lenses will fit on here.

Apart from the latest AFP 70-300 which I’ve recently done a review on and I’ve bought and I use it with my d500. When I go out with my daughter because she loves using this lens to photograph wildlife. I’ve also owned the Nikon 200 to 500-millimeter lens for wildlife but that is too heavy of a lens for her so if she’s out with me.

Should You Buy a Secondhand D90 in 2022

Then during the course of the day, I’ll swap the lens over and I’ll put the 70 to 300 on there for her and she can have a plane take some photos of some birds and all that.

But the AFP lenses. Any AFP lens will not work on this camera now this camera will not go down to iso 100 you can use lo 0.3 l0.7 and this will take you to iso 100 but the recommended base setting for this camera is iso 200. I have found no difference between iso 100 on this camera if I force it to go to iso 100 or iso 200. Because this is what the camera the sensor was designed to use iso 200 so use iso 200.

Now for Astro, I’ve taken photos at iso 3200 which is its maximum setting after that you have to go into the h1 h2 h3 settings so you’re forcing the sensor to use an iso centering that. It was never designed to do Nikon gives you the opportunity of that but the range of iso on this camera is iso 200 to iso 3200.

And this is where you’ll get your best photos my only recommendation even though we can use iso 200 to iso 3200 in this camera is that you pay attention to your iso setting don’t use an iso setting higher than what you need to now let’s get back to the 50mm f 1.8 lenses that I got with this camera. We call it the nifty 50. this is such a cheap lens you can pick this lens up on eBay or amazon on gumtree wherever you like secondhand for around 100.

It is such a good lens you can use it for the macro you can use it for rough flowers. If you’re starting out and you just want to photograph your family.  All that this is such a good lens the reason why I bought the d90 instead of an older d5000 series is that this is what I call a prosumer camera. It’s nice and rugged it’s more weather resistant than the d5000 series or the d3000 series it has more features you can control your white balance manually,

Where you can’t control your white balance manually in the d5000 series or the d3000 series you only can choose presets so this is a plus for this camera if i ever wanted to shut off the autofocus on this camera on the lens. I’ve got the switch here on the side of the camera manual to auto d3000 series d5000 series don’t have that.

It’s only in these cameras that you can have this so in closing would i recommend the d90 definitely for around 150 to 350 dollars and if you’re looking for a secondhand lens then for around 550 600 maximum. You’ve got yourself a very good entry-level camera so thanks for watching enjoy photography and I’ll see you next time.
